Central Editing has been working with organisations in the business, government and academic sectors since 2006 when the business was established by Denise Holden. Our business mission is to improve the quality and effectiveness of our clients’ communications, both print and digital. Denise is the principal editor on most projects. When necessary (for example to meet shortened deadlines) we may engage the services of other experienced writers and editors.

Experience

Before establishing Central Editing Denise held senior corporate and consulting roles in the advertising industry, with a focus on marketing, media and research. In these roles she was responsible for writing and editing proposals, presentations and competitive tenders; and developing staff training programs. Denise also has expertise in compiling and evaluating data, statistics, analysis and research. She assumed her first managing editor role in 1995 as editor of Media Update, a monthly newsletter reporting on trends in the media industry.

IPEd accreditation and qualifications

Denise’s undergraduate degree was in commerce with a major in statistics. She followed this with a master’s degree in writing incorporating a graduate certificate in editing and publishing. She has completed professional development courses through the NSW Writers Centre and Editors NSW, and attained accreditation by the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) in 2011.

Industry involvement

Denise is a member of several writing and editing industry organisations both in Australia and overseas, and is an active supporter of the editing profession. She was editor of the Society of Editors (NSW) newsletter, Blue Pencil, from 2008 to 2011, a member of the 2012 IPEd Standards Revision Working Group, and the NSW delegate to the IPEd Review working party from 2013 to 2014.

She continues to expand her knowledge and skills through attendance at conferences (national editors conferences in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2021) and through professional development courses. In 2015 she presented a paper at the IPEd conference in Canberra, ‘Demystifying Numbers‘, about editing documents  with numerical content. In this year she also attended the first joint conference of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders and the Society of Indexers, themed ‘collaborate and innovate,’ in York (U.K).

Professional standards and codes

Denise Holden is a member of several editing and publishing industry organisations. Membership of these professional bodies requires commitment to and compliance with their established professional standards and codes.

Our client list includes companies in emerging and niche markets as well as market leaders. We work with government organisations and departments at all levels: local, state and federal. Our academic clients range from doctoral candidates to university departments and research programs.
